TOPDOG/UNDERDOG
by Susan-Lori Parks

THE PULITZER PRIZE-WINNING
INAUGURAL STUDIO THEATER PRODUCTION

This season opener comes hot off the heels of its Inaugural Studio Theater performances this summer. Topdog/Underdog is the play that gave us the 1st African-American Female Pulitzer Prize for Drama winner, Suzan-Lori Parks. This darkly comic fable of brotherly love and family identity tells the story of Lincoln and Booth, two brothers whose names, given to them as a joke, foretell a lifetime of sibling rivalry and resentment. Haunted by their past, the brothers are forced to confront the shattering reality of their future.

Topdog/Underdog contains very strong adult language and situations as well as scenes of violence.

THE BLUEST EYE
by Lydia R. Diamond

THIS SEASON'S VIRGINIA STAGE COMPANY COLLABORATION

Adapted from Nobel Prize and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Toni Morrison’s first novel, this play explores race and class during the post-Great Depression era. Young Pecola Breedlove prays for Shirley Temples’ blue eyes, sure that love and acceptance will follow; but for a young black girl in Ohio in the 1940’s, fitting in is easier wished for than done. This poetic narrative illuminates the destructive powers of racism, colorism, and how the dynamics of family and community can lift us up or tear us down.

The Bluest Eye contains strong adult language and situations.
